One Step at a Time
ANXIETY? You CAN Stop in the Middle of Worrying and Open.
What to do when you find yourself worrying about the future? You might be anxious about how you will accomplish your plans you set out to do today. You might be aware of the contraction of your mind and even the stiffness of your body. And on top of that you hate the whole experience and you say to yourself: ”oh, how bad, worry is here again, I will never get rid of it, oh, I fail all the time. I am this anxious person…”
First of all, it is not your fault that anxiety is here. You did not invite it saying please appear today in the morning.
Try this: change the tone in your mind and say gently: Oh, okay. Worry is here.
Can you feel the difference? What happens when you are gentle with yourself?
Anything that you try to push away will get stronger, but if you are curious about it and you look at it calmly it starts to dissipate.
You might want to relax deeper. What if for this moment you forget about the future? Just put it aside for this time being. Don´t worry, you can pick it up later. But for now just let your attention fall into this moment. And as you become relaxed you might want to welcome the worry, the fear or whatever is here with an open mind and heart. What do you experience?
We are attached to planning because it gives us a sense of control. It is useful to have a plan and a schedule for our day, but sometimes it can get out of balance and we might overdo the planning which can end up in stiffness and the narrowing of the mind which then freezes us and we might not do anything.
You may plan your day and then do the things one step at a time.
You can make the decision now that whenever you notice the experience of worry appear in your day you will take a minute or two and acknowledge: ”Worry is here. It is really okay.“ And you can inquire:”What else is here?“ Try and look at the sky. Then, what normally happens is that you will experience more space and openness and you can welcome „not knowing“ which is usually behind worrying.
To be open to not knowing takes courage, but we really do not know what is next. Do we? Acknowledging the fact that in the end we are really not in control can be so freeing. You can enjoy and relax into this day and into this moment, which is where happiness lies.
